Articulate Storyline vs Rise 360: Which to Use for Your Course
Storyline 360 vs Rise 360 compared: interactivity, mobile design, speed of development and LMS publishing — and when to combine both in one course.
Articulate 360 includes two main course authoring tools: Storyline 360 and Rise 360. Both are excellent, but they are built for different jobs. Picking the right one — or combining them — decides how long your course takes to build and how well it works for learners.
Rise 360: fast, responsive and clean
Rise 360 runs in the browser and builds courses from ready-made blocks — text, images, video, accordions, tabs, flashcards, process steps and knowledge checks. Courses adapt automatically to phones, tablets and desktops, so they work well for learners on mobile.
- Best for: policy and compliance training, onboarding, awareness courses and content-heavy learning.
- Strengths: quick to build and update, consistent design, mobile-friendly by default.
- Limits: interactions are limited to what the blocks offer.
Storyline 360: full control and custom interactions
Storyline 360 is a desktop authoring tool for Windows that works slide by slide, with triggers, states, layers and variables. That makes it possible to build scenarios, simulations, branching decisions, drag-and-drop activities and games.
- Best for: scenario-based learning, software simulations, assessments and highly interactive modules.
- Strengths: almost anything you can design, you can build.
- Limits: takes longer to develop, and slide layouts need extra care to work well on small screens.
Use both together
You don’t have to choose only one. Rise 360 can embed a Storyline interaction as a Storyline block, so the main course stays fast and mobile-friendly in Rise while the key interactive moments are built in Storyline. For many projects this gives the best balance of speed and engagement.
Publishing to your LMS
Both tools publish to the common learning standards — SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004, xAPI (Tin Can) and cmi5 — as well as web output. Check which standard your LMS supports and test the published package there before launch: completion, scoring and resume behaviour should all work as expected.
How to decide
- Mostly information, needs to work on phones, short timeline → Rise 360.
- Learners must practise decisions or software tasks → Storyline 360.
- Mostly information with a few key activities → Rise 360 with Storyline blocks.
Frequently asked questions
Is Rise 360 easier to learn than Storyline 360?
+
Yes. Rise 360 works with ready-made blocks and needs no programming logic, while Storyline 360 uses triggers, states and variables that take longer to master.
Do Articulate courses work on mobile phones?
+
Rise 360 courses are responsive by default. Storyline 360 courses play on mobile devices too, but slide-based layouts need to be designed with small screens in mind.
Can Articulate courses run on any LMS?
+
Most LMS platforms support SCORM, xAPI or cmi5, which Storyline 360 and Rise 360 both publish to. Always test the package in your own LMS before launch.
