GA4 Setup for Small Businesses: Track Leads, Calls and Sales
Set up Google Analytics 4 the right way: property and data stream, key events for forms, calls and WhatsApp, Search Console link and the reports that matter.
Google Analytics 4 is free and powerful, but a default installation only counts visits. What a business owner actually needs to know is which channels bring enquiries and sales — and that takes a few extra setup steps. Here is the setup I use for small business websites, in the order I do it.
Step 1: Create the property and web data stream
- In analytics.google.com go to Admin → Create → Property. Set the correct time zone and currency — they affect your reports.
- Add a Web data stream with your website URL and copy the Measurement ID (it starts with G-).
- Keep Enhanced measurement switched on. It records page views, scrolls, outbound clicks, site search and file downloads automatically.
Step 2: Install the tag on every page
Add the Google tag to your site once, so it loads on every page. On WordPress use a trusted plugin or Google Tag Manager; on custom sites add it in the main layout. Then open Reports → Realtime and visit your own site — if you see yourself, data is flowing.
Step 3: Track the actions that matter
Page views don’t pay the bills — leads do. Send an event for each action that means a potential customer, then mark it as a key event in Admin → Events:
- Form submissions — GA4’s recommended event name is generate_lead. Fire it only after the form is successfully sent, not when the button is clicked.
- Phone clicks on tel: links and WhatsApp clicks on wa.me links.
- Purchases with the order value, if you sell online.
A new event appears in GA4 after it fires for the first time, so submit a test form before looking for it.
Step 4: Connect Search Console and your ad accounts
In Admin → Product links, link Google Search Console to see the search queries that bring visitors, and Google Ads so your key events can be imported as conversions for bidding. Use UTM parameters on links in Facebook ads, emails and social posts so those visits are attributed correctly instead of landing in “Direct”.
Step 5: Check the right reports every month
- Acquisition → Traffic acquisition — which channels bring visitors and key events.
- Engagement → Pages and screens — which pages people read and which they leave quickly.
- Engagement → Events — whether your lead events are firing and how often.
- Compare month over month and act on it: improve weak pages, and move budget toward channels that produce leads.
Respect privacy
Never send names, emails or phone numbers into GA4 — it is against Google’s policies. Track that a lead happened and which service it was about, not who sent it. If you get visitors from Europe, add a cookie consent banner with Google Consent Mode.
Frequently asked questions
Is GA4 free for small businesses?
+
Yes. The standard version of Google Analytics 4 is free and is more than enough for small and medium business websites.
What is a key event in GA4?
+
A key event (previously called a conversion) is an event you mark as important to your business, such as a form submission, call click or purchase. GA4 then reports how many key events each channel and page produces.
Why don’t GA4 numbers match my ad platform?
+
Each platform counts differently: different attribution models, ad blockers, cookie consent and time zones all cause gaps. Use each tool for trends and decisions rather than expecting identical numbers.
