Most new businesses jump straight to boosting Facebook posts — and then can’t tell whether the money worked. A solid digital foundation comes first: a place customers can find you, a way to contact you, and tracking that shows what brings sales. This checklist is the order I follow when I set up a startup’s digital presence, so nothing important is missed and every taka spent on ads can be measured.

1. Secure your name: domain, email and social handles

  • Register a short domain that matches your brand name — avoid hyphens and hard spellings.
  • Set up a business email on that domain (like info@yourbrand.com). It looks far more trustworthy than a free address on invoices and proposals.
  • Reserve the same handle on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube and TikTok, even if you won’t use them all yet.

2. Build a simple website that converts

Your website doesn’t need twenty pages on day one. It needs to load fast on mobile, explain clearly what you sell and for whom, and make contacting you effortless. A strong starter site has a home page, one page per main service or product category, an about page and a contact page with a form, phone and WhatsApp link.

My business website checklist covers what each page needs in detail.

3. Claim your Google Business Profile

If customers can visit you or you serve a specific city, a Google Business Profile gets you onto Google Maps and the local results — usually for free. Choose the most specific category, add your hours, phone, website, service areas and real photos, and keep the name, address and phone number identical everywhere online. My local SEO guide explains the full process.

4. Set up social pages properly

  • Create the Facebook Page and Instagram account inside Meta Business Suite, owned by a business portfolio — not by one person’s profile.
  • Add the same logo, short description, website link and contact details on every platform.
  • Publish a handful of useful posts before running any ads, so new visitors see an active brand.

5. Install tracking before you spend on ads

This is the step most startups skip — and the one that decides whether your ads can be optimized at all. Before the first campaign, set up:

  • Google Analytics 4 with conversions for your key actions (form submit, call click, WhatsApp click, purchase).
  • Google Search Console to see which searches bring visitors and catch indexing problems.
  • Meta Pixel and Conversions API so Facebook and Instagram ads optimize toward real leads or sales, not just clicks.

Step-by-step instructions are in my GA4 setup guide.

6. Launch your first campaigns small and measured

Start with one clear offer and one or two campaigns: Google Search ads for people already looking for what you sell, and a Meta campaign to reach the right audience. Give each campaign enough budget to learn, review results weekly, and scale only what produces leads or sales at a cost you can afford. My guide to setting a Facebook Ads budget shows how to work out that number.

Frequently asked questions

What should a new business set up first online?

+

Start with a domain and business email, then a simple mobile-friendly website and a Google Business Profile. Install GA4 and the Meta Pixel before running any paid ads, so results can be measured from day one.

Does a startup need a website if it already has a Facebook page?

+

Yes. A Facebook page can be restricted or lose reach at any time, while a website is yours, ranks on Google, builds trust and lets you track conversions properly for every ad platform.

How long does a startup digital setup take?

+

A focused setup — website, Google Business Profile, social pages and tracking — usually takes two to four weeks, depending on how quickly content, photos and approvals are ready.
